Tall Ships in Town

Two tall ships are visiting Wellington, the cool little capital of New Zealand, this week, and the public can go on board.

The sail training ships Young Endeavour  and Lord Nelson (pictured) have sailed here from Auckland, after appearing in the Auckland Tall Ships Festival.

STS Lord Nelson is the first tall ship to be designed and built to be sailed by people of all physical abilities.  Special features include wide decks for wheelchair users, a speaking compass to enable blind people to steer the ship, and power-assisted hydraulic steering for those with limited strength.

The STS Young Endeavour provides training voyages for young Australians, as part of a youth development scheme.

Both ships ... which are yet to arrive ... will be berthed right down town, at Queens Wharf.

Here’s a great directory of tall ships some with the same rigging types of those that visited Wellington, including The Lord Nelson.
